DEXA body composition scan explained

How a DEXA scan measures muscle, fat, and bone density — what the numbers mean, how they differ from BMI, and when the result should change your plan.

What DEXA measures

A DEXA scan gives a physician-supervised look at body composition: lean mass, fat mass, visceral fat, and bone density. It moves the conversation beyond weight alone. BMI can say whether a person is heavy for height, but it cannot show whether that weight is muscle, subcutaneous fat, abdominal visceral fat, or low bone mass. DEXA is useful because the result can change the plan.

Why the numbers matter

Lean mass matters for strength, insulin sensitivity, resilience, and aging trajectory. Visceral fat matters because fat stored around the abdominal organs is metabolically active and is associated with cardiometabolic risk even in people who do not look overweight. Bone density matters because osteopenia and osteoporosis can be silent until a fracture occurs. A baseline scan creates a starting point, not a judgment.

How Perennial uses it

The point is not to collect a number; it is to decide what should change next. That may mean resistance training priorities, protein targets, visceral fat reduction, bone-health evaluation, or follow-up timing. Repeat scans can show whether the plan is working over time.

Limits and next steps

DEXA is one input, not a diagnosis by itself. It does not replace individualized medical evaluation, and abnormal results may require additional testing or referral. The Baseline Assessment is the usual place to decide whether DEXA belongs in your first measurement set.
